A 2013 thank you from Ada Jane/Matt Marka.‏

Dudes & Dudettes,

2013 was a relatively slow year for any Ada Jane/Matt Marka activity, mainly due to a Zuzu. Jennifer Mack and I welcomed the birth of our daughter, Zuzu Antonia Marka, on May 29th of this year. We are over the moon with her, and are expecting her to start shredding on lead guitar for Ada Jane any day now. The kid needs to earn her keep, no? Child labor laws be damned!

Ada Jane did find the time to play a couple of shows this year. One in Fargo, ND @ NDSU to around 1000 line dancing people, and one @ the 7th St. Entry in MPLS to less people who were chose not to line dance at all. Much thanks to all the people who showed up to the 7th St. Entry show. What a great night.

Also, Jen Mack and I performed our piece “Just Within” @ the Harvest Contemporary Dance Festival in Chicago this September.

There are new songs in the works and demos being made, and don’t forget about all of our 2012 releases….

The Pauses Between: This 7 inch book “The Pauses Between” is a collection of medium format Polaroid photographs taken by Leslie Ostrander and includes a 6 song EP written and recorded by Matt Marka. The music and images are put together because they are meant to be experienced simultaneously. http://mattmarka.bandcamp.com/

Under: Ada Jane’s LP, “Under”, is quite a departure from the Minneapolis rock sounds of their 2009 LP, “Again…Again.” “Under”, is a raw, dark song cycle with moments of beauty and clarity peeking through the periphery “Under” is loosely about life in North Minneapolis, financial struggles, and the passing of time and people. Recorded and mixed in late 2011 and early 2012 at Matt Marka’s home studio, and featuring a guest appearance on trumpet by Dan Eikmeier (Davina & the Vagabonds) http://adajane.bandcamp.com/

Over: Ada Jane’s new EP, “Over”, is the sister release to the bands September 2012 LP, “Under.” The “Over” EP is simply a brief return to rock music for Ada Jane. Featuring the single, “Crawling To The End Of The Year.” http://adajane.bandcamp.com/

As always, thanks for your support. See you in 2014.

naked bob fans?,

-Well, what can I say? The money was just too good to pass up, so naked bob will be reuniting for one show and donating all the evenings poceeds to MWAC (Midwest Art Catalyst), a youth arts fund. Tell all your friends. Especially your older friends. They might remember us…..but probably not. Thee Ben Wilinski will be opening the show @ What’s Up Lounge in Mankato on April 27th. 10pm show.

-Some of you probably don’t know who the F naked bob is so….naked bob is the first band I was in at the ripe old age of 17. Over the course of 7 years we put out three albums and played a bunch of shows all over midwest. The people in naked bob are some of my favorite people in the world, and it’s been pretty great spending time with these folks and revisiting these songs. nakedbobreunionshow

Weheartmusic review of “Under” by Lara Crombie

Their music is appealing for its assertive delivery, smart, sincere lyrics, and singer Matt Marka’s “play-like-it’s-your-last-show-ever” charisma (an attitude that’s often lost on younger generations). That being said, Under demonstrates the band’s desire to meander a bit, exploring the soft underarm tones of vulnerability. Sprinkled amongst the rock-out standards are songs like “Climb Down” and “Late Late Nights,” incidental music for that blurry instant between your last drink and the inevitable navel-gazing that follows. “Climb Down” is practically a lullaby for its sweet demeanor and sad bits of prose: “There’s a boy who wants to be forgiven / A girl that wants to keep on living in her stormy skies.” I’m reminded of those special moments when Paul Westerberg unplugged and gave us stark self-portraits like “It’s A Wonderful Lie.” Marka’s lyrics tackle equally introspective themes: financial woes, passing time, and in a sensegrowing upUnder is very much a “grown ups” album, full of simple questions with complex answers, candid but never wallowing. While Ada Jane subscribed to the school of Rock early on, we like this understated—dare I say, personal—side to rock ego. Click here for the article

A Matt Marka and Leslie Ostrander photo/music collaboration, “the Pauses between”, on Kickstarter. Can you help?‏

Leslie and I have been working on a photography and music collaboration to create an art book. It’s called “the pauses between” and is a small collection of the pauses between light and sound, in a 7″ x 7″ paperback book with a 6 song EP cd. The past 3-4 years we have been busy taking polaroid pictures and writing and recording songs. Now they are polished up and ready to share. In order to do that we are fundraising on Kickstarter. Here is the link to our project for you to see what we’ve been working on!

If you like what we are making, then your contributions of funding and/or spreading the word will be very much appreciated! Your generosity will be rewarded! Thank you!

I’ll be performing w/ local choreographer, Jennifer Mack, @ the Ritz Theater in NE Minneapolis on March 16th-18th for Renovate: 5th Annual Choreographer’s Evening. The evening showcases some of the best local choreography. Jennifer Mack will be dancing to my solo version of the Ada Jane song, “Fall.” For more info go here

Happy Holidays and thank you from Ada Jane. 2012 update.‏

Just wanted to send out a quick thank you for your support in 2011 and give you an update on what’s to come in 2012 for Ada Jane and some solo projects I’m delving into.

2011 was/is busy times. Ada Jane played all over the US this year. As far east as Machias, ME and as far west as San Diego, CA. Somewhere in between those two places in Minnesota Ada Jane played what might be our last show, at least for some time, in November. You can check out some of the footage from our last 400 Bar show in Nov. on our website http://www.adajane.com/blog.

Before Charlie Wilson packed up and moved to Fond du Lac, WI in Nov., we began working on recording a bunch of new songs. The recording is going very well, and I’m confident that this batch of songs will make it out into the world in some form in 2012. Actually, probably an LP and an EP. We’ll obviously let you know about those releases when the time comes.

Also, I’m working on a photography/music collaboration w/ Leslie Ostrander that should see the light of day in 2012. A new venture for both of us. It will likely come in the form of a CD of 5-6 new songs complimenting a slew of Leslie’s photographs in booklet form.

Come say farewell to Charlie Wilson. Ada Jane @ the 400 Bar, 10/28.‏

I’m well aware this is quite the advance warning, but I want everybody to have time to call the babysitter, save beer money, and mark the calendar. Charlie Wilson is moving on to the town of Fond du Lac, WI, home of the Guinness World Record for largest fondue set. You can Wiki that shit!! To say farewell, Ada Jane is gonna throw down @ the 400 Bar on Friday, Oct. 28th w/ two more bands that feature heaping helpings of C Wilson on drums. The Urban Hillbilly Quartet and The Po’ Boys.

I’m not really sure what this means for Ada Jane, but there is no Ada Jane without Charlie Wilson. We’re in the middle of recording some songs that might turn into an album or…something. Maybe not. We have shows planned in Duluth, MN and Maine in November and then….well, anyway, come to the show and celebrate all that is Charlie Wilson. I’ll have more details about set/show times in the coming weeks.

Again…Again and Never Been Better back in stock.

Just a quick note that we have both Ada Jane CD’s(Again…Again and Never Been Better) available for purchase in the merch section again. Both of those titles are also available at all Cheapo locations in the Twin Cities area.

Ada Jane has shows coming up in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Duluth, MN. There is also a Matt Marka solo show booked in Maine(!) for November. Road trip!!

Youtube clip and review of 5/6/11 400 Bar show.

Thanks to Lara Crombie of We Heart Music for the kind words about the show at the 400 Bar on May 6th. Check out the review at http://weheartmusic.typepad.com/ (2nd review on page) Also, thanks to JP for posting the youtube clip of “I Just Want You Near”. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INpcIbwHBGQ

Thanks MPLS & Kato. Also, Again…Again and Never Been Better CD’s are out of stock.

Just wanted to thank all of our friends, family, fans for coming out to see us at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis and What’s Up in Mankato. It was a fantastic end to the best Ada Jane tour that we’ve done. Come on over for a beer and I’ll tell you all about the tour.

Also, we are temporarily out of stock of both Ada Jane records(Again…Again and Never Been Better). We’re in the process of trying to get a few back from local record stores, but until we do you can find both titles at Cheapo in MPLS and I would assume on ebay for reeeeeeeeally cheap. Don’t forget about downloading the music from itunes or Amazon as well. Thanks for listening/supporting!

4/27: Fresno St. University

A noon show at the U of Fresno. There’s something not wholly right about playing rock music at noon. Rock music wakes up much much later, but play we do. Show goes well, and we have to tell more than a few people that we sold out of Ada Jane CD’s yesterday. Feels kinda good.

Now about that 35 hour drive we have back to Minneapolis. Ghaah!!

4/26: Kern River Brewing Co./Kernville, CA

Kern River is beautiful and it smells like citrus trees on the winding road that we take to get there.

It’s true about small town shows. They just go better. The people appreciate. We got treated amazingly well tonight at Kern River Brewing Co. by Eric, Rebecca, and the rest of the staff. Also they make AMAZING beer! The “Just Outstanding IPA” is a fitting name for that beer. Holy deliciousness!

The tour is winding down, and leaving California is going to be more than a bit depressing. Please tell me it’s not still snowing in Minnesota.
